en One of the first acquisitions by the Oriental Institute Library are a collection of papyri, which were acquired before the library had been fully established. One group of these manuscripts, identified as the "Papyri-Wessely" collection, were acquired by the Oriental Institute in July 1934 via Dr. Theodor Hopfner. As described by Prof. Grohmann in an 1938 article appearing in Archiv Orientální, this collection includes 1150 oriental papyri and papers made up of 897 manuscripts and fragments of manuscripts which are in Arabic and other languages. According to Prof. Grohmann, the collection was acquired by Dr. Wessely through an Armenian trader.
