Jaroslav Průšek, the first Director (1952-1971) of the Oriental Institute as a research body incorporated within the framework of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences,, formulated a new research program which meant an important watershed in the hitherto development of Czechoslovak Eastern studies, as well as a starting point of their further progress: The Institute was to acquire the character of an academic research institution and to intensify its publication activities for the benefit of the scholarly world as well as general public.
