Description

en In the following years, the Institute went through a period of rapid development. Under the able leadership of Director Průšek, the existing fields of study flourished and many new ones were created (e.g. African studies, Caucasian studies, Burmese studies, Thai studies, Philippine studies, Indonesian studies, Mongolian studies, Korean studies, Vietnamese studies, Tibetan studies and others). Although the ruling regime even then interfered disproportionately with scientific research from time to time, the Institute achieved significant success, both individually and collectively. The international political context (the disintegration of the world colonial system and the emergence of numerous independent states in Asia and Africa) led to a gradual and welcome shift in the focus of research from the classical disciplines to the study of modern languages, sociolinguistics, lexicography, modern history, literature, etc.
