On the occasion of the centennial of the founding of the Oriental Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, a series of public lectures were held at the Academia Literary Café in the Wenceslas Square in Prague (every Tuesday from 25 January to 15 March 2022, always at 5 pm). The fifth lecture of the cycle was delivered by Ondřej Klimes. The Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (also called East or Chinese Turkestan) is a strategically located and resource-rich northwestern border region of China. Since 2016, the ruling Chinese Communist Party, led by General Secretary Xi Jinping, has intensified its previously restrictive practices against the Uyghurs, Kazakhs and other Muslim nationalities. Given the overall developments in the People's Republic of China and its rise on the international stage, the situation in Xinjiang is an important issue of international politics.
