On the occasion of the centennial of the founding of the Oriental Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, a series of public lectures were held at the Academia Literary Café in the Wenceslas Square in Prague (every Tuesday from 25 January to 15 March 2022, always at 5 pm). The eighth lecture, "A glimpse under the hands of the national policy workers: Southwest China as the cradle of Chinese anthropology", was given by Jan Karlach. Southwest China is part of one of the most ethnically diverse regions in the world and has been relatively neglected in the Czech humanities. A look onto its terrain and under the hands of those who have conducted and are conducting research here will present not only the theoretical and methodological dilemmas in relation to China's ideologically loaded national policies, but also the importance of the region for the development of Chinese anthropology.
