en This first Hindi–Czech Dictionary was a result of decades of work. While the book finally came to fruition in 1998, its journey toward publication was an arduous one. It first begun in the 1940s when Vincenc Pořízka, the founder of Czech Hindi studies, decided that his planned textbook of Hindi should be complemented with a small bilingual dictionary. The first edition of his textbook „Hindština – Hindī Language Course“ was published in both Czech and English in 1963, with an improved and expanded second edition published in 1972. While the textbook became well known and highly valued, both at home and abroad, the planned complementary dictionary was still unpublished. This was not for a lack of work. Since the late 1940s, Pořízka had been systematically collecting excerpts of words, phrases, idioms, and all types of related grammatical information of the Hindi language for his dictionary on slips and carefully inscribing the dates. Over the next thirty years, he was able to build up a large lexical corpus including tens of thousands of slips, which came to fill seventeen medium-size travel suitcases.
